After the very destructive and costly Southern California fires of October 2007, investigators have concluded that many of these fires were caused by downed power lines damaged by high winds. (see articles below)
Power lines sited in remote areas, like the proposed Green Path North project, are even more dangerous because these fires spread quickly and can easily become out of cotrol before firefighters can reach them. Our area is finally starting to show signs of vegitative recovery from the 2006 Sawtooth Complex fire. The last thing we need is the introduction of new fire dangers that come with high voltage transmission lines, along with all destruction imposed by building and maintaining them.
If LADWP wants to increase its renewable energy supply, they can start by enacting policy that promotes local renewable energy generation like rooftop solar. Residents and business owners in Los Angeles can generate far more renewable energy this way, than Green Path North can ever be expected to transport.
